Central government takes action, 17 thousand WhatsApp accounts blocked

New Delhi: The central government has blocked 17,000 WhatsApp accounts involved in cybercrime.

It has been revealed that these accounts are operating from various countries and are involved in cyber crimes in India. The Ministry of Home Affairs has taken decisive steps to prevent digital fraud.

A statement issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs in this regard said,

Cybercriminal activities have been detected, mostly from Cambodia, Myanmar, Laos and Thailand, through these WhatsApp accounts.

Based on a series of complaints filed by victims through online platforms, the investigation revealed that these accounts were used by fraudsters involved in various online financial scams. This highlights the alarming increase in digital frauds. The Cybercrime Coordination Centre reviewed the complaints, identified the suspicious accounts and advised WhatsApp to block these numbers.

In order to deceive victims, ‘digital arrest’ scams are carried out by impersonating law enforcement officials. These fraudsters often pose as agents of the Central Bureau of Investigation, Income Tax officials or Customs officials. They use intimidation tactics. They falsely accuse victims of illegal activities. They also harass them by demanding large sums of money to avoid arrest.

Rising Financial Impact and Government Warnings

Cyber Wing sources reveal that fraudsters are stealing around Rs 6 crore every day through such fraudulent activities. In the first 10 months of 2024, the total amount embezzled reached a staggering Rs 2,140 crore. The Cyber Wing has detected 92,334 cases of digital arrest scams till October, the report said.
