Washington, Nov. 25- Dr. Jay Bhattacharya, 56, a naturalized American born in Kolkata, West Bengal, has been appointed as the new director of the National Institutes of Health.

Trump won the recently concluded US presidential election. He will take office on January 20, 2025. The transition process has begun and is currently underway. Trump is selecting key personnel.
In this regard, the Trump administration’s transition team has recommended Jay Bhattacharya, an Indian-origin doctor, to head the National Institutes of Health, a key organization in the US health ministry.
An official announcement is expected soon.
Born in Kolkata, Jay Bhattacharya went to the US and earned a master’s degree in medicine and a doctorate in economics from Stanford University.
Currently, he is a professor in the Department of Health Policy at Stanford University and is engaged in continuous research on the health and well-being of the poor.
The US National Institutes of Health, of which he was elected as the director, is the largest government agency with an investment of 4.2 lakh crore rupees for medical research.
The institute comes under the Department of Health and Human Services.
Jay Bhattacharya recently met with the head of the department, Robert Kennedy Jr., to discuss the types of innovative research the National Institutes of Health should engage in. It was reported that his suggestions impressed Robert Kennedy.
